Things to consider
Turmeric is a familiar culinary plant; use only washed rhizomes from unsprayed plants and discard rotten or mouldy ones. This does not replace medical advice if used medicinally.
How to grow and care for it
Planting and pot
Plant plump, budded, mould-free rhizomes 5–7 cm deep, buds up, in a pot at least 30 cm wide and deep per rhizome. Optionally pre-sprout at about 30 °C and plant out above 20 °C.
Light
Morning sun and afternoon shade (filtered light); all-day harsh sun can scorch leaves.
Watering
Keep soil evenly moist, not waterlogged; mulch to hold moisture; pots need drainage. Overwatering rots rhizomes.
Feeding
A heavy feeder: organic or balanced feed every 4–6 weeks or monthly, plus 2–5 cm of compost; one source adds potassium-forward feeding.
Pruning
No pruning needed; remove yellow leaves.
Propagation
Propagated by rhizome only, not seed: save several healthy pieces after harvest for next season.
Pests and common problems
Slugs and snails (young plants), spider mites when dry or stressed; aphids, thrips, nematodes, rhizome flies and shoot borers; diseases include rhizome rot, leaf spot, Fusarium and Pythium rots. Prevent with drained soil, dry foliage, rotation and clean seed.
For a bigger harvest
For large, plentiful rhizomes: good seed pieces, filtered light, even moisture, regular feeding and the full 8–10 months. Harvest when leaves and stems yellow and die back; dig carefully, wash and air-dry in a shaded, ventilated place.
